Most people have at least tried Tower of God and Omniscient Reader. For every title you’ll find the English name and the original Korean title (plus common aliases), a real plot rundown, what actually makes it special, running status, chapter count, the official place to read it, its update day, and a spoiler-tagged section you can safely skip.
Let’s get into it.
1. Fog Land (포그랜드) # Also known as Fogland, Fordland Author / Artist POGO (creator of Lessa) Status 🟢 Ongoing Chapters 30+ Updates Every Tuesday Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Dante Kang is an idealistic science teacher who genuinely believes everyone deserves an education — which is how he ends up accepting a post inside Fog Land, a mysterious international prison holding the world’s worst criminals. His first class is cut short by a violent riot, and when the smoke clears, Dante is trapped inside, a prisoner in all but name. The only way out is down: through nine descending circles modelled on Dante’s Inferno, in a prison society that runs on “Fog,” a strange substance that addicts its inmates and grants terrifying power to those who consume enough of it.
Why it’s worth your time: This is POGO’s follow-up to Lessa, and it carries the same DNA — an isolated fortress, a climb-toward-the-center structure, a cast of broken people who turn out to be heartbreakingly human. The Divine Comedy scaffolding isn’t decoration: the hero is literally named Dante, withdrawal is called “Limbo,” and the author has said the story is planned across nine seasons to mirror the nine hells. It’s rare to find a shonen-style power system welded this tightly to actual literary architecture, and rarer still to find a prison story whose hero’s weapon is teaching. Early chapters already have a devoted fandom for a reason.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The riot isn’t random, and Dante’s “captor” is far more important to the prison’s mythology than he first appears. Inmates who gorge on Fog can attempt “ascension” to become the prophesied Supreme Leader — but most who try literally burst and die. Dante’s route through the nine circles will force him to rely on exactly the criminals he came to reform.
2. Colorist (컬러리스트) # Also known as カラーリスト (Karārisuto) Author / Artist 89line Status 🟢 Ongoing Chapters ~50 Updates Every Thursday (Naver) Read officially Naver Webtoon (Korean; official English release not yet available — Japanese available on LINE Manga) What it’s about: The world has been dyed black. Ever since the Black Witch appeared, humanity has been squeezed into a single giant city of light and color, sending “pioneering corps” out into the monster-haunted darkness to slowly reclaim the earth. Kay is a boy who wants nothing more than to join the pioneers — but he was born achromatic, completely colorless, in a world where color is power and the colorless are treated as lesser. Then a freak accident plunges him into black ink… and he comes out black: the one color nobody has ever seen on a person, and one with a terrifying property — it can absorb every other color it touches.
Why it’s worth your time: Colorist started life as a fan-uploaded “Best Challenge” comic and was voted into official serialization by readers — and you can feel that grassroots energy in every chapter. The color-as-power system isn’t just clever on paper, it’s a gift to the art team: every fight is a deliberate composition of hex codes and ink. Underneath the spectacle is a warm outcast story about a boy whom society literally graded as empty, becoming the most dangerous and most alive person in the city. Think early Hunter x Hunter’s sense of expedition into the unknown, with a visual identity unlike anything else serializing right now.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Kay’s black isn’t a normal color: he drains other colorists’ powers permanently, and when his stored color runs out he reverts to colorless. Worse, when a ruin-scanning machine reads his hex code, it identifies his black as the Black Witch’s own color — strongly implying his power was made by the very being who destroyed the world.
3. The Devil’s Classroom (사채지간) # Also known as Private Debtors, Debt-Bound Classroom, The Loan Shark Teacher, 闇金教師 Story / Art Heukbaek (흑백) / Kim Dong-chan (김동찬), YLAB Status 🟢 Ongoing Chapters ~40 Updates Every Tuesday (Naver) Read officially Naver Webtoon (Korean; no official English release yet — Thai and Japanese available) What it’s about: Kim Sang-an is a cold-blooded loan shark — the kind of man who would crawl into hell itself to collect what’s owed. When his younger sister, a schoolteacher, takes her own life after being relentlessly tormented by her students, Sang-an doesn’t go to the police. He uses every connection he has to become the new homeroom teacher of her class, so he can collect the one debt that matters: her life. A debt collector who has never lost, against a classroom of students who are nothing short of demons — a brutal teacher-student relationship begins.
Why it’s worth your time: Korean school-revenge manhwa is a crowded field, but The Devil’s Classroom stands out by making its avenger genuinely frightening rather than cool. Sang-an doesn’t fight these kids with fists — he fights them with contracts, interest rates and leverage, treating adolescent cruelty with the same pitiless accounting he’d apply to a defaulting debtor. It’s a queasy, fascinating inversion: you keep asking whether the monster collecting the debt is any better than the monsters who owe it. The school-violence critique underneath is sharp, and the slow revelation of what was actually done to his sister lands like a hammer. One of the most compelling new titles of the year.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Sang-an’s “lessons” are structured like loan collections: each student is made to pay back what they did to his sister in a carefully engineered equivalent. As he digs deeper, it becomes clear the bullying wasn’t playground cruelty but something organized — and some adults at the school were collecting their own debts from her.
4. Surviving the Apocalypse (종말에서 살아남기) # Also known as 末日求生, 終末サバイバー, Sobreviviendo al Apocalipsis Author / Artist SONG (송) Status 🟢 Ongoing (Season 1 complete, Season 2 serializing) Chapters 55 (Season 1) + ongoing Updates Every Friday Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: He has no name. He has spent his entire life locked in an underground prison, subjected to brutal survival training by the only person he knows — his own father, a madman who keeps repeating one sentence: “The end is coming.” The boy doesn’t know when, doesn’t know how, doesn’t even know if the world outside still exists. He only knows the training, the survival knowledge drilled into him day after day, and the question eating him alive: is his father insane, or is he the only sane man on earth? Then, one day, the apocalypse actually arrives — and the boy’s hellish childhood turns out to be the only reason he’s ready for it.
Why it’s worth your time: Most apocalypse stories start on day one of the disaster. This one starts with a childhood so disturbing that the end of the world almost reads as freedom — and that inversion powers everything. Watching a boy who has never seen the sky navigate a collapsing world with feral competence is gripping, but the real hook is emotional: every skill that saves his life is also a scar his father carved into him. The series keeps circling one unanswerable question — was this abuse, or love expressed by a broken man who knew what was coming? Fair warning: it contains adult themes and doesn’t flinch.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Season 1 ends with the boy finally escaping the underground facility into a world already in ruin — confirming the father’s prophecies were real. The deeper mystery of Season 2 is how the father knew, and what his connection to the catastrophe actually is.
5. Leviathan (레비아탄) # Also known as Deep Sea Water (심해수) Story / Art Lee Gyuntak / Noh Miyoung Status ✅ Completed (Korean original, 200+ chapters); English re-release ongoing Chapters 200+ total; English release in progress Updates Every Friday (English re-release) Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: It has rained for decades. The sea swallowed the continents, humanity clings to survival on ships and floating scrap, and the oceans now belong to the leviathans — mutated sea monsters that treat human vessels like snack boxes. Siblings Bota and Lita lose their father, Teon Ma, to one of these creatures in the opening chapters, and are taken in by Kana, a lethal, unreadable harpooner who seems to know far too much about their father — and about the monsters.
Why it’s worth your time: People called this “the manhwa successor to Attack on Titan” when it ran on Toomics, and the comparison is honestly earned: a caged, dwindling humanity, monsters that turn out to be more than monsters, and a slow drip of world-answers that recontextualize everything. But Leviathan has its own flavor — a waterlogged, biopunk melancholy. The sea is drawn as genuinely hostile, not just a backdrop, and the sibling bond keeps the sprawling lore anchored to something small and warm. It finished its full Korean run, so unlike most long series, this one has a real ending waiting for you.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Kana is not entirely human, and her connection to the leviathans runs deeper than hunting them. The creatures’ origin is tied to what humanity did to the oceans before the rains — the apocalypse was self-inflicted.
6. The Boxer (더 복서) # Also known as Deo Bokseo Author / Artist JH (Jung Ji-Hoon) Status ✅ Completed Chapters 133 (including extras) Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON · print via Ize Press / Yen Press What it’s about: A legendary boxing coach, K, is at the end of his career when he spots Yu — a bullied, hollow-eyed teenager with a monstrous, unteachable gift: he can see punches before they’re thrown. K takes him in and builds him into a champion. The catch? Yu is a natural genius who feels nothing. Where every sports story ever tells you talent is a blessing, The Boxer asks what it’s like to be so good at something that it means nothing to you.
Why it’s worth your time: JH wrote the anti-power-fantasy. Yu’s emptiness isn’t a quirk to be fixed by friendship montages; it’s the actual subject of the story, and the series surrounds him with fighters who burn with everything he lacks — Ryu, the hot-blooded brawler; Injae, the hardworking almost-champion. By the time Yu and Ryu finally meet in the ring, it isn’t a match, it’s an argument about what being alive is for. The stark, heavy-inked art is unforgettable. An anime adaptation has been announced — read it before everyone pretends they always knew about it.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Yu’s apathy traces back to watching his father’s death as a child. The final arc isn’t about winning a belt — Yu walks away from boxing at his peak, having finally found the one thing he was never given: a reason of his own.
7. Bastard (후레자식) # Also known as Hulejasik (literal: “Son of a Bitch”) Story / Art Carnby Kim / Youngchan Hwang (the Sweet Home duo) Status ✅ Completed Chapters 94 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Jin Seon is a quiet high schooler who keeps to himself — because at home, his father Dongsoo Jin, a beloved CEO and philanthropist, is a serial killer who has been forcing Jin to act as his accomplice since childhood. Jin has survived by going numb and never getting close to anyone. Then he meets Kyun Yoon, a transfer student with her own scars, and for the first time he has something to protect — at the exact moment his father chooses her as his next victim.
Why it’s worth your time: From the same creative team as Sweet Home, but tighter and crueler. The horror here isn’t monsters, it’s intimacy: every scene of domestic politeness between Jin and his father vibrates with threat. What elevates it above standard thriller fare is Jin himself — the story takes seriously what it costs a child to grow up as a weapon in someone else’s hand, and lets his slow, trembling decision to resist feel genuinely earned. Ninety-four chapters, no fat, an ending that sticks the landing.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Jin’s mother didn’t abandon the family — Dongsoo pushed her from a rooftop and staged it. The finale forces Jin to choose between the father-shaped hole in his life and the people who saw him as human, in a confrontation that costs nearly everything.
8. Pigpen (돼지우리) # Also known as Dwaejiuri, Pig Pen Story / Art Carnby Kim / Cheon Beom-sik Status ✅ Completed Chapters 56 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: A man washes ashore on a remote island with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He’s taken in by the island’s only residents — an odd, too-hospitable family who keep pigs, lock their doors at night, and whose smiles never quite reach their eyes. As his memory trickles back in fragments, he starts finding things on the island that suggest he may have had a very good reason to end up in the sea.
Why it’s worth your time: Another Carnby Kim joint, and proof that Sweet Home was no fluke. Pigpen is a masterclass in slow-burn dread built on one devastating device: the amnesiac protagonist and the reader learn the truth at exactly the same pace, and every revelation makes both of you want to stop. The island’s geography becomes a puzzle box, the family dinners become interrogations, and the question quietly flips from “what are they hiding?” to “what is he?” Fifty-six chapters of pure, suffocating atmosphere.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The family are killers — but the protagonist’s buried memories implicate him in violence of his own, and his arrival on the island was no accident. The ending refuses a clean answer about whether anyone on that island deserved to leave it.
9. Shotgun Boy (쇳군보이 / 샷건보이) # Also known as — Story / Art Carnby Kim / Hongpil Kim Status ✅ Completed Chapters 69 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Gyuhwan is a bullied high schooler who runs from his tormentors during a class retreat and stumbles on something half-buried in the woods: a shotgun, with shells. The same night, the retreat is attacked by “variants” — monsters that steal human faces and wear them. Now the school’s bottom feeder is the only armed person in a forest full of shapeshifters, standing between the monsters and the classmates who made his life hell.
Why it’s worth your time: This is the prequel to Sweet Home’s monster apocalypse, and it’s leaner and meaner than its more famous sibling. The face-stealing premise weaponizes every school hierarchy: the friend calling your name might be wearing your friend’s face. But the engine of the story is moral, not mechanical — Gyuhwan holds the gun, and the story keeps asking what a person owes the people who destroyed him. His answer changes chapter by chapter, and watching it change is the real pleasure.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Gyuhwan is infected and becomes a variant himself — one who keeps his humanity, becoming humanity’s first monster protector. The series’ “Zero” is directly tied to the variant origin that bleeds into Sweet Home’s world.
10. Distant Sky (심연의 하늘) # Also known as Simyeonui Haneul, Sky of the Abyss Story / Art Inwan Youn / Sunhee Kim (YLAB Superstring universe) Status ✅ Completed Chapters 106 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Haneul wakes up in pitch darkness, half-buried in rubble. Seoul has collapsed into a sinkhole; the sky is gone, the lights are gone, and something in the dark is eating the survivors. His only goal is absurdly simple: climb up, and see the sky again. Along the way he’s joined by Heyool, a girl who has already survived more of this nightmare than he has, and together they descend through the city’s corpse toward answers neither of them wants.
Why it’s worth your time: Part of YLAB’s interconnected Superstring universe but perfectly readable alone, Distant Sky does something rare for disaster horror: it’s about hope, sincerely, without being naive. Haneul is not special. He’s terrified, ordinary, and kind in situations where kindness is objectively stupid — and the story treats that stubborn kindness as its own form of heroism. Sunhee Kim’s art turns darkness itself into a character. There’s a spread late in the series involving the actual sky that will live in your head for months.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The catastrophe wasn’t natural — it traces back to a secret project and human experimentation (the “creatures” were once people). Haneul eventually reaches the surface and sees the sky; what it costs him, and Heyool’s role in getting him there, is the emotional payload of the finale.
11. The Horizon (수평선) # Also known as Supyeongseon, Horizon Author / Artist JH (Jung Ji-Hoon, author of The Boxer) Status ✅ Completed Chapters 21 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: In a country shattered by war and plague, a boy who has just lost his mother meets a girl who has lost everything else. Neither says much. They simply decide to keep walking — toward the horizon, on the logic that if the world has an edge, then whatever is destroying it must have an edge too. Twenty-one short chapters follow their walk through the ruins of the adult world.
Why it’s worth your time: Before The Boxer made him famous, JH made this: a 21-chapter masterpiece with almost no dialogue, told in long silences and small gestures. Adults in The Horizon are either absent, mad, or dying; the children inherit a world they didn’t break and walk through it with a dignity the grown-ups never managed. It will take you one sitting and it will hurt in a very specific, very good way. If you only read one title from this list, make it this one.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The girl doesn’t survive the journey — and the boy keeps walking anyway, carrying her with him. The final pages, where he reaches the sea and meets other survivors, land on something that isn’t happiness but is unmistakably hope.
12. Kubera (쿠베라) # Also known as One Last God: Kubera Author / Artist Currygom Status 🟢 Ongoing Chapters 500+ Updates Every Monday Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: On the day of her sixteenth birthday, Kubera Lee’s village is destroyed, and she’s saved — or collected — by Asha, a cold, brilliant magician with her own agenda. Kubera’s name, she’s told, holds power: it’s the name of a god, and people have been killing for it. What follows is an enormous epic of gods, suras, magicians and cosmic grudges spanning planets and eons, with a village girl at the center of prophecies she never asked for.
Why it’s worth your time: Kubera has been running since 2010 and has quietly become one of the great long-form fantasy achievements in comics — not “great for a webtoon,” just great. The early chapters’ cute art is a deliberate misdirect; this is a tragedy about power, grief, and the names we carry, plotted with a patience most novelists can’t manage. Mysteries seeded in chapter 3 pay off in chapter 400. The fan wiki exists for a reason: this is a world you inhabit. Start now and you’ll have 500+ chapters of one of the best-kept secrets in the medium.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Asha is not a mentor — she’s one of the story’s central antagonists, and her reasons for keeping Kubera alive are self-serving in ways that take hundreds of chapters to fully unfold. Kubera’s name ties her to the primeval gods and the true history of the universe’s creation.
13. Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid (고래별) # Also known as Whale Star, Goraebyeol Author / Artist Na Yoonhee Status ✅ Completed Chapters 75 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Korea, 1926 — the Gyeongseong era, under Japanese occupation. Su-a is a young woman sold into servitude at the estate of Kang Uihyeon, a wounded, reclusive independence activist recovering from an assassination attempt. She was sent there to be a pair of eyes. Instead, over shared books and small kindnesses, servant and master begin saving each other — while the occupation tightens around them like a tide.
Why it’s worth your time: It’s Moby Dick retold as a Korean resistance romance, and somehow that wild premise produces one of the most beautiful webtoons ever drawn — Na Yoonhee’s painted panels of sea, snow and lantern light are genuinely museum-grade. But the beauty isn’t escapism: the story stares straight at what occupation costs ordinary people, and lets its romance grow in the shadow of sacrifice. The “whale” of the title becomes a symbol for every impossible thing the characters keep chasing. Seventy-five chapters, complete, devastating, gorgeous.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Uihyeon dies for the cause — the story never pretends resistance is survivable. Su-a outlives him and carries his work forward, and the final chapters reframes her servitude as the beginning of her own defiance rather than the end of her freedom.
14. Annarasumanara (안나라수마나라) # Also known as Annarasumanara: The Sound of Magic Author / Artist Ha Il-Kwon Status ✅ Completed Chapters 27 (3 volumes) Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Yun Ai used to believe in magic. Then her father went bankrupt and disappeared, her mother left, and she became an adult overnight — working, studying, raising her little sister, starving quietly. One day, chasing a blown-away bill, she climbs to the abandoned amusement park on the hill and meets Ri Eul: a man in a magician’s costume who insists, against all evidence, that he is a real magician. “Do you believe in magic?” he asks. She doesn’t. That’s the whole problem.
Why it’s worth your time: Netflix adapted this as The Sound of Magic, but the original manhwa by Ha Il-Kwon (one of the true auteurs of the medium) is stranger and sadder. It uses actual magic as a metaphor for everything poverty makes you surrender — play, belief, the right to want things — and the washed-out art blooms into color whenever wonder briefly wins. Twenty-seven chapters about what growing up takes from you, and what refusing to grow all the way up costs. Bring tissues.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal Ri Eul was once Ryu Min-hyuk, a top student who cracked under the pressure to be perfect and walked away from the life built for him. His “magic” may or may not be real — the story refuses to say — but his disappearance at the end leaves Yun Ai changed for good.
15. Surviving Romance (살아남은 로맨스) # Also known as Salanameun Romaenseu, Surviving as a Romance Heroine Author / Artist Lee Yone Status ✅ Completed Chapters 81 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Chaerin, an ordinary office worker exhausted by life, escapes every night into her favorite romance novel — and then wakes up inside it, as its heroine. Dream come true, right? She knows the plot, she knows the gorgeous male lead, she knows the happy ending. Except on the day the novel’s story is supposed to end… it doesn’t. The school gates lock, the sky goes wrong, and the zombies arrive. The romance novel she memorized has become a survival horror, and her “knowledge of the plot” is now a map of a country that no longer exists.
Why it’s worth your time: The genre-twist premise (shojo isekai → zombie apocalypse) is the hook, but Lee Yone executes it with real intelligence: Chaerin’s genre-savviness keeps getting punished, the male lead turns out to be far more than a trope, and the story becomes a genuinely tense survival thriller that never stops being about stories and why we hide inside them. It’s funny, scary and sneakily moving, with one of the best heroines on the platform. Criminally underread.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The male lead knows he’s a character in a novel — and the story’s world has been looping, resetting every time it “ends,” with him retaining fragments of memory across loops. Chaerin isn’t the first outsider to fall in.
16. Death’s Game (이재, 곧 죽습니다) # Also known as I Will Die Soon, Yi-jae, I’m Going to Die Soon Story / Art Lee Won-sik / Ggulchan Status ✅ Completed Chapters ~84 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Yijae has been failing for years — failed exams, failed jobs, failed relationships — and one night he decides he’s done. He jumps. But death doesn’t take him. Death (a person, and she’s furious) sentences him instead: he must live through twelve more lives, each one a different person, each one doomed to die. If he can survive any one of them, he gets to live. If not — hell.
Why it’s worth your time: Yes, there’s a hit K-drama, but the manhwa is its own beast: an anthology of twelve doomed lives — a chaebol heir, a stuntman, a schoolkid, a killer — each drawn as a complete short story about what that person wanted and why it wasn’t enough. The series builds an extraordinary machine for empathy: Yijae begins as a man who believed his life wasn’t worth living, and is forced, life by life, to inhabit everyone else’s reasons to keep going. The finale recontextualizes his own death in a way that reframes the entire series. Handle with care if suicide is a sensitive topic for you — but it is ultimately, fiercely, on the side of life.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The twelfth and final life is his mother’s. Living her decades of quiet endurance — including her grief for the son she lost — is what finally breaks his despair. Death’s sentence was never cruelty; it was the only way to make him understand what his death actually cost.
17. Money Game (머니게임) # Also known as Meonigeim; followed by the sequel Pie Game (파이게임, adapted as Netflix’s The 8 Show) Author / Artist Bae Jin-soo Status ✅ Completed Chapters 56 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Eight strangers, drowning in debt, accept an invitation to a mysterious game. The rules are simple: stay inside the building for 100 days, and the prize pool — billions of won — is theirs to split. The catch: everything they buy inside (food, water, furniture) is charged against the prize at 1,000x markup, and the pool ticks upward only while they all keep playing. Congratulations: you’ve just built a tiny capitalist society with eight people, and the money is always watching.
Why it’s worth your time: Before Netflix turned the sequel into The 8 Show, Bae Jin-soo’s original was already one of the sharpest social thrillers in webtoons. There’s no masked gamemaster torturing anyone — the horror is entirely procedural: alliances form, a market emerges, someone monopolizes water. You’ll catch yourself doing the math along with the players and realizing, with a chill, that you’d make the same choices. Fifty-six chapters of economics as horror fiction.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The game’s real mechanism is inequality: one player corners resources and the “society” stratifies into rulers and ruled within weeks. The survivors win money that can never repay what the game revealed about them.
18. Ghost Teller (귀전구담) # Also known as Gwijeongudam, Ghost Story Teller Author / Artist QTT Status ✅ Completed Chapters ~80 Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially WEBTOON What it’s about: Six ghosts gather in the dark to do what ghosts do best: tell ghost stories. Only their ghost stories are all about humans — because in their experience, nothing that haunts the night is half as frightening as what people do to each other in broad daylight. Each arc is one ghost’s account of the human cruelty they witnessed, or suffered, while alive.
Why it’s worth your time: The framing device inverts a century of horror tradition and it never gets old: a ghost leans in and whispers, “have I got a scary story about people for you.” QTT’s anthology format means every few chapters deliver a complete, gut-punch story with a twist, and the ghosts’ growing camaraderie between tales gives the collection a warm heartbeat. It’s horror for people who love The Twilight Zone — morality plays where the monster has a job, a family, and a plausible excuse.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The ghosts aren’t random strangers — each of them died because of human cruelty, and their gathering is part remembrance, part quiet reckoning. The final arcs tie their stories, and their deaths, together.
19. Dungeon Reset (던전 리셋) # Also known as Deonjeon Rises Story / Art Daul / Antstudio Status ✅ Completed Chapters 130+ Updates Completed — binge freely Read officially Tappytoon · Tapas What it’s about: Dawoon is summoned into a deadly dungeon “game” — except the summoning glitches, and while everyone else gets swords and fireballs, he’s classed as a producer: zero combat ability, a toolkit full of crafting skills. Left for dead at the bottom of a trap, he discovers his glitch goes deeper: every time the dungeon resets, its rules apply to him a little less. Armed with a purification skill, a bloodthirsty rabbit assistant, and an adorable ground squirrel, he starts exploiting the dungeon’s mechanics in ways its designers never imagined.
Why it’s worth your time: In a genre drowning in edgy power fantasies, Dungeon Reset is the clever, good-natured rebel. Dawoon wins not by leveling up but by reading the patch notes — digging, crafting, composting(!), and systematically breaking a murder-dungeon into a farm. It’s genuinely funny, endlessly inventive, and weirdly cozy for a death-game setting, while the underlying mystery (who’s running the game, and what the resets actually do to the players) keeps a slow-burn tension under the comedy. The rare dungeon manhwa you finish feeling better.
⚠️ Spoilers — tap to reveal The resets wipe the players’ memories — most of the dungeon’s “veterans” have died and restarted dozens of times without knowing it. Dawoon’s glitch makes him the only one who accumulates across resets, turning him from weakest player to the game’s existential bug.
20. Merriam-Webster
DaFuq!?Boom! on YouTube Merriam-Webster’s Gen Alpha slang guide Brainrot: from older writing to internet culture #The phrase brain rot was first recorded in Henry David Thoreau’s 1854 book Walden, but its modern meaning is strongly tied to online content, doomscrolling, memes and algorithm-driven platforms. Oxford reported a 230% increase in its usage from 2023 to 2024 and selected it as the 2024 Word of the Year. Oxford University Press · BBC
Slang with deeper cultural roots #It is easy to call every unfamiliar expression “TikTok slang.” It is also often inaccurate.
African American English and Black culture #Terms such as cap, no cap, bet, drip, bussin’, and lit are connected to Black language, music, and cultural expression. Some gained visibility through hip-hop; others spread through creators, short-form video, gaming chats, memes, and mainstream marketing.
African American English is not a temporary online trend. It is a complete language variety with a history that predates TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, YouTube, and modern social media by generations.
Queer, drag and ballroom culture #Words including slay, serving, reading, shade, and many expressions about fashion, confidence, and performance have important ties to Black queer, ballroom, and drag communities.
Using a term is not automatically disrespectful. The problem is treating culturally rooted language as a new invention simply because it became popular on a mainstream platform.
Gaming, streaming and fandom culture #Some of the biggest slang terms began in online communities:
NPC comes from tabletop role-playing games and video games. Lore and canon event come from fantasy, gaming, fandom, and franchise culture. Rizz and Fanum tax became mainstream through Twitch, YouTube, stream clips and creator communities. Delulu moved from K-pop fandom spaces to general social media. Skibidi is inseparable from absurdist YouTube meme culture. How to use slang naturally #The best way to sound natural is usually to use less slang, not more.
Match the setting. “Bet” works in a group chat. It probably does not belong in a job application, client email, legal document, or condolence message.
Use words you genuinely hear around you. Slang changes by city, country, age group, community, school, gaming circle, and platform.
Know the tone. “Cooked” can mean doomed or brilliant. “Main character energy” can be praise or criticism. Context decides which meaning people hear.
Do not turn slang into a costume. If a phrase has roots in AAVE, ballroom, drag, or a specific fandom, learn the context rather than treating it as disposable trend material.
Be careful with insults. Calling someone an NPC, simp, delulu, or chronically online may be funny among close friends and rude nearly everywhere else.
Use clear language when it matters. “That seems suspicious” never expires. “That is sus” may be perfect—or may date your writing instantly.
Natural vs. forced slang #Natural:
“The deadline is tonight, I have written two sentences, and I’m cooked.”
Forced:
“Greetings, team. No cap, this quarterly report is bussin’, and we are serving main-character sigma energy.”
The first uses one phrase to add personality. The second sounds like a social-media manager has been left unsupervised near the company newsletter.
Frequently asked questions #Is Gen Z slang really invented by Gen Z? #Not always. Many terms associated with Gen Z existed before Gen Z popularised them. Others come from African American English, Black queer culture, gaming, music, drag, livestreaming, K-pop, and fandom communities.
TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, Twitch clips, Discord servers and meme pages make slang travel faster. They do not always create it.
What is the difference between Gen Z and Gen Alpha slang? #There is a lot of overlap.
Gen Z slang is often connected to social media, gaming, fandoms, streaming, memes and the internet culture of the 2010s and 2020s. Gen Alpha slang is especially associated with gaming humour, YouTube Shorts, short-form video, creator culture, and intentionally absurd “brainrot” phrases such as skibidi, sigma, and Fanum tax.
What does skibidi actually mean? #There is no precise, stable definition. Skibidi is mainly a reference to the viral Skibidi Toilet series and absurd Gen Alpha meme culture.
Depending on the context, it can mean weird, cool, bad, silly, chaotic, or nothing at all. The absence of a strict definition is part of the joke.
Is brainrot a real word? #Yes. It is widely recognised in dictionaries and major publications, though people often use it humorously. In current internet language, it can mean low-value or repetitive online content, or an obsessive attachment to a fandom, game, show, meme, or creator.
Oxford selected brain rot as its 2024 Word of the Year, and later added it to the Oxford English Dictionary. Oxford University Press
Which slang words are safe at work? #Use clear language first. In informal teams, terms such as vibe, low-key, lore, or GOAT may work if they already suit the workplace culture.
Avoid trend-heavy terms, insults, and culturally specific expressions unless you know your audience well. If you would not say it to a client, do not put it in a company-wide announcement.
Final thoughts #Slang is a snapshot of how people make language playful, social, ironic, and expressive. Some words will become ordinary vocabulary. Others will become screenshots people laugh at in three years.
That is normal.
Learn the meaning, understand the context, credit the culture when it matters, and remember: knowing what rizz means is useful. Trying to demonstrate your rizz in every sentence is how you lose it.
Sources and further reading # Merriam-Webster: Rizz meaning and origin Merriam-Webster: Delulu meaning Merriam-Webster: Gen Alpha slang guide Oxford University Press: Brain rot added to the OED Oxford Word of the Year 2024 press kit NBC News: How Black culture shapes Gen Z slang WIRED: Fanum explains the Fanum tax Know Your Meme: Fanum tax origin Know Your Meme: Kai Cenat and the rise of rizz DaFuq!?Boom! official YouTube channel Join the conversation #Internet slang changes faster than almost any dictionary can keep up with. The modern seven are simply the latest arrangement of continental crust.
Over billions of years, that crust has repeatedly collided into vast landmasses—called supercontinents—and later fragmented again. Pangaea was the most recent and most famous, but Earth’s deeper history may include Pannotia, Rodinia, Columbia/Nuna, Kenorland, Ur and Vaalbara, along with major long-lived continents such as Gondwana, Laurasia, Laurentia, Baltica and Siberia.
The familiar map of Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Antarctica and Australia is only one frame in a planet-length geological film.
Continents move because they are part of tectonic plates. Plates diverge at rifts and mid-ocean ridges, collide to build mountain belts, and disappear or change direction at subduction zones. Over hundreds of millions of years, those movements open oceans, close oceans and rearrange land into entirely different worlds.
The result is the supercontinent cycle: repeated episodes in which much of Earth’s continental crust assembles into one very large landmass, then breaks apart again. Researchers generally use “supercontinent” for a landmass containing most of Earth’s continental crust, although the exact threshold varies among studies. Britannica: Supercontinent · USGS: Plate tectonics
The farther back in time we go, the less complete the evidence becomes. Pangaea is reconstructed in great detail using rock belts, fossils, magnetic data and seafloor history. A proposed Archean landmass such as Vaalbara is much less certain because more than 3 billion years of erosion, metamorphism and tectonic recycling have altered or destroyed much of the original evidence.
What counts as a continent? #The word continent means different things in geography and geology.
Geographic continents #In modern geography, Earth is usually divided into seven continents:
Asia Africa North America South America Antarctica Europe Australia Europe and Asia are physically joined as Eurasia, while Africa, Europe and Asia can also be treated as the wider connected landmass of Afro-Eurasia. The seven-continent model is a cultural and educational convention, not a list of seven separate tectonic plates.
Geological continents #Geologists focus on continental crust: thick, relatively buoyant crust made largely of granitic rocks. A geological continent can include submerged continental shelves and fragments that are not separate “continents” in everyday geography.
Examples include:
Zealandia: a largely submerged continent around New Zealand and New Caledonia. Madagascar: a continental fragment that separated from Africa and later India. India: once part of Gondwana, later an isolated drifting continental block before colliding with Asia. Arabia: a continental plate that rifted away from Africa. Greenland: geologically part of the North American continent / Laurentian craton despite its distinct geography. Supercontinents #A supercontinent is a much larger assembly containing most of Earth’s continental crust. Pangaea is the clearest example. Earlier candidates are increasingly uncertain because their rocks are older and their original boundaries have been heavily altered.
Modern geography is only the current stage of a much older tectonic story. Continental assembly is rarely one event on one date; it usually takes tens to hundreds of millions of years, with collisions and rifting occurring at different times along different margins.
The seven modern continents #The present-day continents are still moving. The Atlantic Ocean is widening at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, East Africa is slowly rifting, India continues to push into Asia, and Australia is moving north toward Southeast Asia.
Asia #Asia is the largest modern continent and part of the wider Eurasian landmass. It contains old continental cores—including Siberia, North China, South China, India and Arabia—that were once separated by oceans and later assembled through collision.
How it formed: Asia grew through long-term collision and accretion. India’s collision with Eurasia, beginning roughly 50 million years ago, built and continues to uplift the Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau. Earlier identity: Much of Asia did not exist as one coherent continent during Pangaea. Siberia, China blocks, India, Arabia and smaller terranes had separate tectonic histories. Modern life: Asia contains Arctic tundra, taiga, deserts, temperate forests, tropical rainforest, mountain ecosystems and monsoon landscapes. Future: India will keep converging with Eurasia, while Australia continues moving north. Africa #Africa is a relatively stable continent centred on several ancient cratons, including the Kaapvaal, Congo, Tanzania and West African cratons.
How it formed: Most of Africa’s continental core was assembled in Precambrian time. It later became central to Gondwana and then Pangaea. Earlier identity: Africa was joined to South America, Antarctica, India, Madagascar, Arabia and Australia within Gondwana. Modern life: It ranges from the Sahara and Namib deserts to the Congo rainforest, Mediterranean ecosystems, savannas and highland regions. Future: The East African Rift may eventually split part of eastern Africa from the rest of the continent, creating a new ocean basin over geological time. Europe #Europe is a western peninsula of Eurasia in physical geography, but a separate continent in many cultural and educational models.
How it formed: Europe was assembled from ancient fragments including Baltica, Avalonia and parts of Laurentia. Collisions between these blocks created mountain belts such as the Caledonides and, later, the Alps. Earlier identity: Europe spent different periods attached to Laurentia/North America, Baltica, Gondwana-derived terranes and Eurasia. Modern life: Europe is dominated by temperate forests, grasslands, Mediterranean habitats, alpine regions and northern boreal environments. Future: Africa is moving north toward Europe, and the Mediterranean Basin is gradually being reshaped by convergence. North America #North America is built around the ancient Laurentian craton, a stable core that includes much of Canada, Greenland and the central United States.
How it formed: Laurentia was involved in several ancient continental configurations, including proposed reconstructions of Columbia, Rodinia and later Laurussia and Pangaea. Earlier identity: During Pangaea, North America was joined to Europe and northwestern Africa. Matching mountain belts and fossil distributions helped establish continental-drift theory. Modern life: Arctic tundra, boreal forest, temperate forest, prairie, desert, wetlands and tropical ecosystems occur across the continent. Future: North America is moving generally westward away from Europe as the Atlantic Ocean continues to open. South America #South America was a core part of Gondwana and fit tightly against Africa before the South Atlantic opened.
How it formed: Its older crust includes the Amazonian, São Francisco and Río de la Plata cratons, later assembled within Gondwana. Earlier identity: South America joined Africa, Antarctica, Australia, India and Arabia in Gondwana; fossil and glacial evidence across these now-separated lands was central to Wegener’s continental-drift case. Modern life: It contains the Amazon rainforest, Andes, Atacama Desert, Pampas, Patagonia, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. Future: The Andes will continue evolving as the Nazca Plate subducts beneath western South America. Antarctica #Antarctica is a modern continent covered by a vast ice sheet, but it was not always frozen.
How it formed: Antarctica was a major component of Gondwana and remained linked to Australia, India, Africa and South America at different times. Earlier identity: During the Paleozoic and early Mesozoic, parts of Antarctica supported forests, wetlands and dinosaur ecosystems. Fossil plants and vertebrates show that its climate was once far warmer. Modern life: Most life is marine or coastal: penguins, seals, seabirds, algae, lichens, mosses and microbial communities. Future: Antarctica is currently isolated by the Southern Ocean and circumpolar current, which helps maintain its cold climate. Australia #Australia is the emergent portion of a larger continental region that includes the mostly submerged continent of Zealandia.
How it formed: Australia was part of eastern Gondwana with Antarctica, India and Madagascar. It separated from Antarctica gradually during the Cenozoic. Earlier identity: During Gondwana time, Australia lay much farther south and experienced different climates, including cooler and sometimes polar conditions. Modern life: Its long isolation contributed to high endemism: marsupials, monotremes, diverse reptiles, eucalyptus woodlands, ancient conifers and rich reef ecosystems. Future: Australia is moving north toward Southeast Asia and may eventually collide with island arcs and parts of Asia. Ancient continents and continental blocks #Not every important ancient landmass was a global supercontinent. Some were cratons—old, stable pieces of continental crust—or large continental blocks that repeatedly joined and separated from larger assemblies.
Vaalbara: a possible Archean continental assembly # Detail Description Approximate age About 3.6–2.8 billion years ago Main proposed pieces The Kaapvaal Craton in southern Africa and the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia Status Proposed and debated; often described as Earth’s earliest possible supercontinent or supercraton Earth conditions Archean Earth had oceans, active volcanism, little free oxygen in the atmosphere and no confirmed plants or animals Life Microbial mats, bacteria and archaea; cyanobacteria may have formed stromatolites and contributed oxygen locally What happened The proposed assembly broke apart or ceased acting as a connected unit; later tectonic events heavily altered its rocks Vaalbara is named from Vaal in the Kaapvaal Craton and bara from the Pilbara Craton. The idea is based on similarities in rock ages, structures and paleomagnetic signals between southern Africa and Western Australia. However, not all geologists accept that these cratons formed one coherent continent, and its exact shape remains unknown. Britannica: Supercontinents · Geological Society of London: supercontinent reconstructions
At this time, Earth had no forests, no insects, no fish, no dinosaurs and no land animals. Life was microscopic and overwhelmingly marine or shoreline-based. Stromatolites—layered structures built by microbial communities—are among the most visible fossil evidence from this ancient world.
Ur: an ancient continental nucleus # Detail Description Approximate age Formed around 3.0 billion years ago; pieces persisted through later supercontinents Likely remnants Parts of India, Australia, Madagascar and possibly other southern cratons Status Often described as one of Earth’s earliest continents, but not necessarily a supercontinent Earth conditions Ocean-dominated planet with volcanic island arcs and limited atmospheric oxygen Life Microbes, cyanobacteria and stromatolite-forming communities What happened Ur’s crust was incorporated into later continental assemblies, especially Gondwana Ur is often described as an unusually old, long-lived continent. Unlike Pangaea, it did not simply appear, exist as one giant map-shaped landmass, and vanish. Instead, its ancient crust survived through later collisions and became part of younger continental systems.
The term is useful because continental crust can outlive the continents it once formed. A craton may be recycled into multiple later supercontinents while retaining ancient minerals, rock belts and magnetic signatures. Britannica: Supercontinents
Kenorland: an Archean–Paleoproterozoic candidate # Detail Description Approximate age About 2.7–2.5 billion years ago Main proposed pieces Parts of present-day North America, Greenland, Scandinavia, southern Africa and Australia Status Proposed supercontinent; details and even the degree of unity remain debated Earth conditions Major changes in atmosphere and oceans occurred around and after this interval Life Microbial ecosystems, cyanobacteria, stromatolites and early photosynthetic communities What happened Rifting and tectonic reorganisation; breakup may have contributed to climate and ocean-chemistry changes Kenorland is usually reconstructed as a large assembly near the end of the Archean Eon. Its breakup roughly overlaps with a major transition in Earth history: the Great Oxidation Event, when atmospheric oxygen rose substantially around 2.4 billion years ago.
Researchers do not claim that continental breakup alone “caused” oxygenation. However, tectonics, volcanic gases, chemical weathering, ocean chemistry and microbial photosynthesis were deeply connected. The breakup of large landmasses can alter coastlines, nutrient delivery, weathering and carbon cycling—all of which affect the conditions in which life evolves. Britannica: Kenorland overview · Geological Society of London
Columbia or Nuna: the first widely accepted Proterozoic supercontinent # Detail Description Approximate age Roughly 2.1–1.6 billion years ago; some reconstructions focus on 1.8–1.5 billion years ago Alternative name Nuna Main proposed pieces Laurentia, Baltica, Siberia, North China, India, Australia, Antarctica and other ancient cratons Status Widely accepted as a major supercontinent, though its detailed arrangement remains debated Earth conditions The planet was largely oceanic; atmospheric oxygen was higher than in the Archean but still far below modern levels Life Eukaryotic cells existed; algae and microbial communities dominated; no confirmed animals, land plants or forests What happened Rifting began in the Mesoproterozoic and set the stage for later continental reorganisation into Rodinia Columbia, also called Nuna, was the first supercontinent whose existence is widely accepted by many geologists, although maps of exactly how its continental pieces fit together remain uncertain.
The key point is that Earth’s continents were not static: ancient cores now found in North America, Scandinavia, Siberia, India, Australia and Antarctica likely shared tectonic histories within a much larger Proterozoic assembly. Britannica: Supercontinent · PBS Eons: Supercontinent timeline
Life was still entirely unlike the world of Pangaea. There were no trees, flowers, fungi on land, insects, fish, reptiles or dinosaurs. The biosphere was dominated by microbes and simple eukaryotes in the oceans.
Rodinia: the supercontinent before the Snowball Earth interval # Detail Description Approximate age Assembled mainly about 1.3–0.9 billion years ago; began breaking up around 800–750 million years ago Main proposed core Laurentia, broadly surrounded by other continental blocks in many reconstructions Status Major, widely recognised supercontinent; exact layout is debated Earth conditions Long-lived supercontinent with extensive interiors, changing ocean circulation and possible links to severe global glaciations Life Eukaryotic algae, microbial mats, early multicellular organisms and simple marine ecosystems What happened Rifting broke Rodinia apart; the resulting configuration preceded Cryogenian “Snowball Earth” glaciations and later animal diversification Rodinia is one of the best-known pre-Pangaea supercontinents. Its name comes from the Russian word rodina, meaning “motherland.” Many reconstructions place Laurentia—the ancient core of North America and Greenland—near its centre.
Rodinia’s exact shape is unresolved. Scientists compare ancient mountain belts, sedimentary basins, rock chemistry and paleomagnetism to test possible fits. The broad conclusion is stronger than any single map: much of Earth’s continental crust was assembled into a giant Proterozoic landmass, which later rifted apart. Britannica: Supercontinent · Yale: Reconstructing pre-Pangaean supercontinents
The breakup of Rodinia occurred before or during a dramatic climatic chapter called the Cryogenian Period, when Earth may have experienced near-global glaciations. The “Snowball Earth” hypothesis remains an active field of research, but geological evidence shows glacial deposits at unusually low paleolatitudes. Smithsonian Ocean: Earth through time
Pannotia: a short-lived and debated bridge between Rodinia and Gondwana # Detail Description Approximate age About 650–540 million years ago Alternative label Sometimes called the “Vendian supercontinent” Main proposed pieces Gondwana plus Laurentia, Baltica and Siberia in a short-lived configuration Status Debated; accepted by some reconstructions and questioned by others Earth conditions Late Neoproterozoic Earth recovering from major glaciations; shallow seas and changing ocean chemistry Life Ediacaran biota, early animals, microbial mats and increasingly complex marine ecosystems What happened Fragmented relatively quickly, opening new oceans and leaving Gondwana as the largest long-lived continental mass Pannotia is sometimes placed between Rodinia and Pangaea, but its status is more controversial than Pangaea or Rodinia. Some geologists interpret evidence for a short-lived global assembly around 600 million years ago; others see a looser configuration of continents rather than a true supercontinent.
What is not in doubt is that this was a pivotal biological interval. The Ediacaran Period saw the rise of large, complex organisms before the Cambrian diversification of animals. EARTH Magazine: Pannotia · PBS Eons: supercontinent timeline
Gondwana, Laurasia and other major ancient continents #These landmasses were not all supercontinents in the strictest sense. They were, however, enormous and long-lived continental systems that shaped the evolution of life.
Gondwana: the great southern continent # Detail Description Approximate age Assembled by roughly 600 million years ago; fragmented mainly from about 180 million years ago onward Included Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia, India, Madagascar, Arabia and smaller fragments Status Major continental assembly; central part of Pannotia in some models and southern half of Pangaea later Earth conditions Moved across high southern latitudes; experienced warm periods, extensive forests and late Paleozoic glaciation Life Ediacaran organisms, Cambrian marine animals, early land plants, Glossopteris forests, reptiles, dinosaurs, mammals and flowering plants What happened Rifting separated Africa from South America, India from Madagascar, and Australia from Antarctica; its pieces now form much of the Southern Hemisphere Gondwana may be the most important ancient continent after Pangaea because it existed in some form for hundreds of millions of years. At different points it included most modern southern continents and several of the largest continental blocks on Earth.
Its fossil record was central to the acceptance of continental drift. The seed fern Glossopteris, the freshwater reptile Mesosaurus, the land reptile Lystrosaurus and the cynodont Cynognathus are found on continents now separated by oceans. Their distributions make sense when South America, Africa, India, Antarctica and Australia are reconstructed as connected Gondwanan land. USGS: Plate tectonics and fossil evidence · Britannica: Gondwana
Fossil distributions across reconstructed Gondwana helped demonstrate that today’s southern continents were once connected. Image via Wikimedia Commons
Gondwana’s flora and fauna # Ediacaran and Cambrian: Marine ecosystems diversified in surrounding shallow seas. Ordovician and Silurian: Early plants colonised land; Gondwana occupied high southern latitudes in many reconstructions. Devonian and Carboniferous: Forests spread; early tetrapods and insects evolved. Permian: Glossopteris seed ferns became widespread, especially across southern Gondwana. Triassic and Jurassic: Dinosaurs, early mammals, conifers, cycads, ginkgos and ferns flourished. Cretaceous and Cenozoic breakup: Isolation drove distinctive regional evolution, especially in Australia, Antarctica, South America and Madagascar. Laurentia: the ancient core of North America # Detail Description Approximate age Ancient craton assembled mainly in Precambrian time; active in many later continental configurations Modern remnants Most of North America and Greenland Status Craton / continent-sized block, not a separate global supercontinent Earth conditions Shifted from tropical to polar latitudes repeatedly over deep time Life Hosted marine shelves, Paleozoic forests, dinosaurs, mammals and later Ice Age ecosystems What happened Laurentia survived as the core of North America after participating in Columbia, Rodinia, Laurussia and Pangaea Laurentia is the ancient continental nucleus beneath much of modern North America and Greenland. It was a key component of Rodinia, later collided with Baltica and Avalonia to form Laurussia, and eventually became the northwestern part of Pangaea.
Its long survival illustrates another important geological point: the oldest continental cores can persist while their coastlines, neighbours, climate zones and ecosystems change completely.
Baltica: the ancient northern European craton # Detail Description Approximate age Precambrian craton; distinct Paleozoic continent Modern remnants Scandinavia, Finland, parts of northern and eastern Europe Status Continental block / craton Earth conditions Drifted independently through Paleozoic oceans before collision with Laurentia Life Marine invertebrate-rich shelves, later terrestrial forests and Paleozoic animals What happened Collided with Laurentia and Avalonia to help form Laurussia; later became part of Pangaea and Eurasia Baltica was once an independent continent separated from Laurentia by the Iapetus Ocean. When that ocean closed, collisions built mountain belts whose worn remnants now appear in places as far apart as Scandinavia, Scotland, Ireland, Greenland and eastern North America.
Siberia, North China and South China #These were major continental blocks with separate histories.
Continental block Key history Later fate Siberia / Angara An independent Paleozoic continent in many reconstructions, often at high northern latitudes Collided into Eurasia during the assembly of Pangaea-related landmasses North China Craton Ancient stable crust with a complex history; often separate from Pangaea proper Later joined Asia through long tectonic processes South China Craton A distinct continental block, sometimes near Gondwana or equatorial seas Became part of East Asia through later collisions Tarim Small continental block now beneath northwestern China Accreted into Asia during Paleozoic–Mesozoic tectonic evolution These blocks are important because maps that show Pangaea as a single, perfect “all land” continent simplify a more complicated reality. During some intervals, parts of North China, South China and other terranes remained separated by oceans or marginal seas.
Avalonia: a microcontinent that helped build Europe #Avalonia was a smaller Paleozoic continental terrane that rifted from Gondwana and later collided with Baltica and Laurentia.
Today, rocks with Avalonian history underlie parts of:
England and Wales Ireland Belgium and the Netherlands Northern Germany Newfoundland Nova Scotia Coastal New England Its story explains why pieces of Britain, Ireland, Canada and the eastern United States share related Paleozoic geological histories.
Laurussia or Euramerica: the northern Paleozoic continent # Detail Description Approximate age Mainly about 425–335 million years ago Included Laurentia, Baltica and Avalonia Status Major composite continent; a key precursor to Pangaea Earth conditions Equatorial and tropical regions supported extensive wetlands and coal-forming forests Life Early vascular plants, giant arthropods, sharks, ray-finned fishes, lobe-finned fishes, early tetrapods and amniotes What happened Collided with Gondwana and other blocks during Pangaea’s assembly Laurussia, also called Euramerica, formed as the Iapetus Ocean closed. It included the cores of North America and Europe and sat near equatorial latitudes for much of its history.
This was the world of Carboniferous coal swamps: dense forests of lycophytes, horsetails, ferns and seed plants. High oxygen levels and warm wetlands supported giant arthropods, including enormous dragonfly relatives. Early tetrapods and the first amniotes appeared during this broader Paleozoic interval. PBS Eons: supercontinents and life
Laurasia: Pangaea’s northern half # Detail Description Approximate age Recognisable from the breakup of Pangaea, roughly 200–66 million years ago Included North America, Europe and much of Asia Status Northern continental mass produced by Pangaea’s breakup Earth conditions Jurassic and Cretaceous greenhouse climates; widening Atlantic and changing seaways Life Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, early mammals, conifers, cycads, ferns and later flowering plants What happened Continued to fragment and rearrange into North America, Europe and Asia When Pangaea began to rift, it split broadly into Laurasia in the north and Gondwana in the south. Laurasia later separated further as the Atlantic opened between North America and Europe.
The Mesozoic world was not dominated by flowering plants at first. Early dinosaurs lived among conifers, cycads, ginkgos, ferns and horsetails. Flowering plants became more widespread later, especially during the Cretaceous. Smithsonian Magazine: dinosaurs and ancient landscapes
Earth’s supercontinents #Pangaea: the latest and best-known supercontinent # Detail Description Approximate age Began assembling around 335 million years ago; fully assembled by roughly 300 million years ago; began breaking apart about 225–200 million years ago Name meaning Greek for “all Earth” or “all land” Major components Gondwana, Laurussia and additional blocks including Siberia and parts of Asia Surrounding ocean Panthalassa, with the Tethys and other seaways along parts of its margins Earth conditions Huge continental interior with strong seasonal extremes and extensive arid regions; coastal and equatorial zones were more diverse Life Late Paleozoic forests, synapsids, reptiles, amphibians; then post-extinction Triassic life, dinosaurs, pterosaurs and early mammals What happened Continental rifting opened the Atlantic and Indian oceans, splitting Pangaea into Laurasia and Gondwana and then today’s continents Pangaea existed from the late Paleozoic into the early Mesozoic, roughly 300–200 million years ago. It was the latest full supercontinent and therefore the easiest to reconstruct.
North America, Europe, northwestern Africa and South America fit together not only in coastline shape but also in mountain belts, rock sequences, glacial deposits and fossil distributions. The Appalachian Mountains, for example, share a deeper history with mountain belts in Greenland, Britain, Scandinavia and northwest Africa. USGS: What was Pangaea? · USGS: Historical perspective on continental drift
Pangaea around 250 million years ago. Image via Wikimedia Commons
What Pangaea was like #Pangaea was not uniformly desert, but its size created enormous interior regions far from ocean moisture. Those areas often experienced strong temperature swings and seasonal rainfall. Coastal regions, river basins, uplands and equatorial zones held more varied ecosystems.
During the late Permian, Pangaea contained:
Conifers, seed ferns, ginkgophytes, horsetails and other gymnosperm-dominated vegetation. Amphibians and reptiles. Synapsids, the evolutionary group that includes mammals and many famous pre-mammalian animals. Marine ecosystems surrounding the continent that included brachiopods, ammonoids, sharks, bony fish and reef organisms. At the end of the Permian, around 252 million years ago, Earth experienced its largest known mass extinction. The event devastated marine and terrestrial ecosystems. In the early Triassic, survivors such as the dicynodont Lystrosaurus became widespread before ecosystems diversified again.
Later, during the Triassic, the first dinosaurs and mammal relatives evolved. By the Jurassic, Pangaea’s breakup had begun in earnest. USGS: Pangaea breakup · Smithsonian: the dinosaur world
Why Pangaea broke apart #Pangaea did not explode or sink. It rifted gradually as tectonic forces stretched the continental crust.
Heat and mantle processes weakened parts of the continental interior. Rifts formed, allowing magma to rise and create volcanic zones. Continental crust thinned and fractured. New oceanic crust formed between separating blocks. The Atlantic Ocean widened between North America, Africa, Europe and South America. Continued rifting split Gondwana into Africa, South America, India, Antarctica, Australia, Madagascar and Arabia. The USGS describes an early three-pronged rift between Africa, South America and North America. As rifting continued, the growing Atlantic became a new ocean basin. USGS: What was Pangaea?
Proposed future supercontinent: Amasia, Pangaea Proxima and Aurica #Earth’s tectonic story is ongoing. Scientists have proposed several possible future supercontinents, but these are scenarios, not predictions.
Proposed name Basic idea Why it remains uncertain Amasia The Americas may move north and collide with Asia near the Arctic Plate motions can change, and future subduction patterns are hard to predict Pangaea Proxima / Pangaea Ultima The Atlantic may eventually close, bringing the Americas back toward Africa and Europe Depends on whether and where new subduction zones develop in the Atlantic Aurica Both Atlantic and Pacific ocean systems could reorganise into a different supercontinent configuration Based on modelling assumptions that cannot be verified so far ahead These scenarios are useful reminders that the present continents are not the endpoint of Earth history. They are a temporary arrangement.
Why continents assemble and break apart #Plate tectonics is the engine #Earth’s lithosphere—the rigid outer shell—consists of tectonic plates moving over a hotter, more deformable mantle beneath. Continental crust rides on these plates.
At different boundaries, plates can:
Diverge: move apart and form rifts or new ocean crust. Converge: collide, subduct, close oceans and build mountain ranges. Transform: slide past one another along faults. Accrete terranes: attach island arcs, microcontinents and crustal fragments to larger continents. This is why mountain belts can preserve the seams of ancient collisions, and why fossils of the same ancient species appear on modern continents now divided by oceans. USGS: Plate tectonics
The supercontinent cycle #The supercontinent cycle is the long-term pattern of assembly and breakup. It affects:
Ocean circulation Sea level Volcanism Mountain building Atmospheric carbon dioxide Weathering of rocks Nutrient flow into the oceans Global climate The distribution and evolution of life A giant continent can create dry interiors because moisture has difficulty reaching areas far from coasts. Fragmented continents create more coastlines and shallow seas, often increasing habitat diversity.
Research links supercontinent assembly and breakup to long-term changes in climate, sea level and atmospheric carbon dioxide, though no single variable controls the entire system. The supercontinent cycle and Earth’s long-term climate
Flora and fauna through continental history #The continents did not merely change position. Their movements helped shape evolutionary opportunities and barriers.
Time interval Continental setting Characteristic flora Characteristic fauna Archean, before 2.5 billion years ago Small early cratons and proposed assemblies such as Vaalbara and Ur No land plants; microbial mats, cyanobacteria, stromatolites Microbial life only; no confirmed animals Paleoproterozoic, 2.5–1.6 billion years ago Kenorland breakup and Columbia/Nuna assembly Cyanobacteria, algae and microbial communities Single-celled and early eukaryotic life Mesoproterozoic, 1.6–1.0 billion years ago Columbia fragments; Rodinia begins assembling Eukaryotic algae and microbial communities Mostly microscopic eukaryotes; no complex land ecosystems Neoproterozoic, 1.0–541 million years ago Rodinia, Pannotia debate, Gondwana assembly Algae, microbial mats and early multicellular organisms Ediacaran organisms, early sponges and the first animal lineages Cambrian–Ordovician, 541–444 million years ago Gondwana dominates the south; other continents dispersed Early land plants begin appearing late in the interval Trilobites, brachiopods, molluscs, early fish and diverse marine invertebrates Silurian–Devonian, 444–359 million years ago Laurentia, Baltica and Avalonia converge; Gondwana persists Vascular plants, early forests, lycophytes, ferns and early seed plants Jawed fish, sharks, insects, arachnids and first tetrapods Carboniferous–Permian, 359–252 million years ago Laurussia collides with Gondwana; Pangaea forms Coal-swamp forests, giant lycophytes, ferns, seed ferns, conifers Giant arthropods, amphibians, early reptiles and synapsids Triassic–Jurassic, 252–145 million years ago Pangaea then early Laurasia and Gondwana Conifers, cycads, ginkgos, ferns and horsetails Dinosaurs, pterosaurs, marine reptiles, crocodile-line archosaurs and early mammals Cretaceous, 145–66 million years ago Gondwana and Laurasia fragment further Flowering plants diversify and spread; conifers remain important Diverse dinosaurs, birds, insects, mammals and marine reptiles Cenozoic, 66 million years ago–today Modern continents take shape Flowering plants, grasslands, modern forests and tundra Mammals, birds, modern marine ecosystems and humans Plants did not colonise land until long after the earliest continents formed. The decade started with gaming, esports, Fortnite events and the lockdown explosion of Just Chatting. Then creators figured out that they could turn themselves into broadcasters, promoters, sports organisers and even television networks. By the middle of the decade, some of the biggest Twitch streams had almost nothing to do with sitting down and playing a game. There were boxing matches in football stadiums. There were creator racing events. There were month-long subathons. There were esports co-streams where viewers preferred a former professional player’s reaction to the official broadcast. And then there was Ibai. His La Velada del Año events became so large that the viewer count itself became part of the show. This article looks at three major high-viewership Twitch broadcasts from each year between 2020 and 2026, with 2026 covering the year so far. The main measurement used here is peak concurrent viewers, meaning the highest number of people watching a stream simultaneously. That distinction matters. “Most watched” can mean peak viewers, average viewers, total hours watched or unique viewers. Those are very different statistics. A creator who streams every day can accumulate more total watch time than someone who has one gigantic event, even if that event attracts millions of simultaneous viewers. For that reason, this article is primarily a history of Twitch’s biggest individual live audiences.
Research note: Historical Twitch data is not perfectly preserved. Some old VODs have disappeared, some events were broadcast across several channels or platforms, and different analytics services can report slightly different numbers. When an original VOD is unavailable, the Stream link below points to the creator’s Twitch channel instead of using an unreliable or invented VOD URL.
Twitch’s Biggest Streams of the 2020s at a Glance # Year Creator Stream / Event Peak Viewers 2020 TheGrefg Fortnite Galactus event ~660K 2020 Ibai New Year’s Eve broadcast ~552K 2020 Shroud Twitch return ~488K 2021 TheGrefg Fortnite skin reveal 2.47M 2021 Ibai La Velada del Año ~1.54M 2021 Ibai KOI presentation ~363K 2022 Ibai La Velada del Año II 3.36M 2022 ElXokas January 2022 record stream ~1.21M 2022 AuronPlay Major 2022 broadcasts ~600K 2023 Ibai La Velada del Año III 3.44M 2023 TheGrefg ESLAND Awards ~1.75M 2023 Squeezie GP Explorer 2 ~1.34M 2024 Ibai La Velada del Año IV 3.85M 2024 RebeuDeter Major 2024 broadcast ~1.2M 2024 Aminematue Major 2024 broadcast ~988K 2025 Ibai La Velada del Año V 9.33M 2025 Squeezie GP Explorer 3 ~1.37M 2025 Kai Cenat Mafiathon 3 finale 1.01M 2026 Ibai La Velada del Año VI ~1.6M on Twitch 2026 Virginia Fonseca Carnival IRL stream ~664K 2026 Kai Cenat Streamer University / major streams 700K+ range The figures above are rounded for readability. Some event-wide numbers are different from the peak on one creator’s channel, especially when multiple creators were co-streaming the same event.
2020: The Year Twitch Went Mainstream #2020 was the year Twitch stopped feeling like a niche gaming website. The pandemic kept people at home. Esports moved online. Among Us became a global social phenomenon. Just Chatting exploded. Fortnite remained enormous. Twitch recorded more than 18 billion hours watched during 2020, according to Streams Charts. The biggest broadcasts were still strongly connected to games, but the first signs of the creator-event era were already there.
1. TheGrefg: Fortnite Galactus Event # Creator: David “TheGrefg” Cánovas Date: December 1, 2020 Peak viewers: Approximately 660,000 Duration: Around 4 hours Category: Fortnite User discretion: None beyond normal Fortnite gameplay, loud reactions and creator commentary Stream: TheGrefg on Twitch The original VOD is no longer reliably available on Twitch. What happened? #Fortnite’s Galactus event was one of the defining gaming events of 2020. Epic Games had spent weeks building anticipation around Galactus, the Marvel villain who was about to arrive in Fortnite. The event itself was short. The anticipation was not. TheGrefg streamed the event and his reaction to it, pulling roughly 660,000 concurrent viewers.
Why was it so popular? #TheGrefg did not create the event. He created the place where hundreds of thousands of people experienced it together. That distinction would become extremely important during the next few years. A Twitch creator did not necessarily need to own the event. They just needed to be the personality viewers wanted beside them while it happened. Fortnite gave viewers the spectacle. TheGrefg gave them the personality. And Twitch gave everyone a chat room to react together.
2. Ibai: New Year’s Eve on Twitch # Creator: Ibai Llanos Date: December 31, 2020 Peak viewers: Approximately 552,000 Duration: Several hours Category: Just Chatting / special event User discretion: General adult humour and live commentary Stream: Ibai on Twitch The original broadcast is not reliably available as a permanent Twitch VOD. What happened? #Ibai spent New Year’s Eve broadcasting with other creators, effectively making a Twitch version of the traditional Spanish New Year’s television show. This was an important moment for Spanish-speaking Twitch. New Year’s Eve is appointment television. People know exactly when they want to be watching. Ibai brought that same behaviour to Twitch.
Why was it so popular? #The audience did not need to be interested in gaming. They simply needed somewhere to spend New Year’s Eve. That sounds obvious now, but in 2020 it was still a relatively new idea. Ibai was showing that Twitch could host shared cultural moments, not just gaming sessions. The audience was there because it was New Year’s Eve, but they stayed because Ibai made the stream feel like a party.
3. Shroud: The Twitch Return # Creator: Michael “shroud” Grzesiek Date: August 2020 Peak viewers: Approximately 488,000 Duration: Several hours Category: Gaming / variety User discretion: Normal gaming content and strong language Stream: Shroud on Twitch The original return VOD is no longer reliably available. What happened? #Microsoft shut down Mixer in 2020, leaving major creators such as Shroud looking for their next platform. Shroud returned to Twitch. Hundreds of thousands of people showed up.
Why was it so popular? #It was not really about the game. It was about seeing a familiar star return to the platform where many viewers had originally discovered him. The stream was effectively a celebrity comeback. It also demonstrated one of the most important advantages a major creator has over a traditional media channel. The audience follows the person. The platform can change.
2021: TheGrefg Breaks Twitch #2021 was when Twitch’s biggest individual creators started producing audiences that looked more like television numbers. The biggest moment of the year came from a Fortnite cosmetic. That sounds ridiculous. It also became one of the most important broadcasts in Twitch history.
1. TheGrefg: Fortnite Skin Reveal # Creator: TheGrefg Date: January 11, 2021 Peak viewers: 2,468,668 Duration: Approximately 4 hours 14 minutes Category: Fortnite / special event User discretion: None beyond normal Fortnite gameplay and creator commentary Stream: TheGrefg on Twitch The original VOD is no longer reliably available. What happened? #TheGrefg was getting his own Fortnite Icon Series skin. Instead of quietly showing it in a YouTube video, he turned the reveal into a live event. There was a countdown. There was anticipation. The audience kept growing. Then the skin appeared. The peak reached 2,468,668 concurrent viewers, a number Guinness World Records recognised as the record for the most concurrent viewers on an individual Twitch stream at the time.
Why was it so popular? #The actual reveal probably took minutes. People watched for hours. That tells you everything about the power of anticipation. Viewers wanted to see the skin before everyone else. They wanted to hear TheGrefg’s reaction. They wanted to be part of the moment when the record was potentially broken. The stream became bigger than the Fortnite skin itself. It was a creator reveal, a gaming event and a Twitch record attempt happening at the same time. That combination was almost impossible to resist for TheGrefg’s audience.
2. Ibai: La Velada del Año # Creator: Ibai Llanos Date: May 26, 2021 Peak viewers: Approximately 1.54 million Duration: Several hours Category: Creator boxing User discretion: Boxing, physical contact and strong language Stream: Ibai on Twitch The original event VOD is not reliably available. What happened? #Ibai had an unusual idea. Take internet creators, train them to box, put them in a proper venue and broadcast the fights. It could have been a novelty. Instead, it became one of Twitch’s defining formats. The first La Velada del Año reached roughly 1.54 million viewers.
Why was it so popular? #The boxing was only half the story. The fighters already had audiences. Viewers knew them from YouTube, Twitch and social media. They knew their personalities, jokes, friendships and sometimes their arguments. So when two creators entered the ring, viewers were not watching strangers. They were watching people they already had an opinion about. That made every punch more interesting. The event also created a blueprint for everything that followed: announcement, buildup, training, rivalry, fight night. The actual broadcast was the final chapter.
3. Ibai: KOI Presentation # Creator: Ibai Llanos Date: December 15, 2021 Peak viewers: 362,679 Duration: Approximately 4 hours 49 minutes Category: Esports / creator business User discretion: General live commentary Stream: Historical TwitchTracker record What happened? #Ibai and Gerard Piqué announced their esports organisation KOI. The presentation attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers.
Why was it so popular? #By late 2021, people were watching Ibai even when he was not playing a game. They wanted to know what he was building. KOI was an interesting collision between traditional sports celebrity and internet culture. Piqué was a world-famous footballer. Ibai was one of the biggest streamers in the Spanish-speaking world. Put the two together and an esports announcement suddenly became appointment viewing. It was another sign that a large creator could use Twitch as a launchpad for businesses, teams and media projects.
2022: The Creator Event Takes Over #2022 was the year Twitch proved that a creator-made sports event could rival the platform’s biggest gaming broadcasts. La Velada II was the main event. It was also the moment Ibai completely changed the Twitch record book.
1. Ibai: La Velada del Año II # Creator: Ibai Llanos Date: June 25, 2022 Peak viewers: 3,356,074 Duration: Approximately 5 to 6 hours Venue: Palau Municipal d’Esports de Badalona Category: Creator boxing User discretion: Boxing, physical contact, injuries and strong language Stream: Original Twitch VOD Historical data: TwitchTracker What happened? #The first La Velada had already been successful. The second edition was on another level. Creators with huge audiences were fighting in front of a live crowd while millions watched online. The event reached 3,356,074 concurrent viewers on Ibai’s Twitch channel. At the time, it became Twitch’s all-time individual peak-viewer record.
Why was it so popular? #The event had something that ordinary streams rarely have. A story. People had been following the fighters before fight night. They knew who liked each other. They knew who did not. They had watched training. They had watched interviews. They had picked favourites. The audience was emotionally invested before the first bell. Streams Charts found that more than 6.1 million unique viewers watched Ibai’s broadcast over the course of the event, and a substantial portion of those people had not recently been watching Twitch at all. That is an important clue. La Velada was not simply serving Twitch’s existing audience. It was bringing an outside audience into Twitch.
2. ElXokas: The January 2022 Twitch Explosion # Creator: Joaquín “ElXokas” Domínguez Date: January 24, 2022 Peak viewers: Approximately 1.21 million Duration: Several hours Category: Just Chatting / variety User discretion: Strong language, adult humour and controversial discussions Stream: ElXokas on Twitch What happened? #ElXokas was already one of the biggest Spanish-speaking creators, but early 2022 saw some enormous individual broadcasts. His peak eventually reached more than 1.2 million viewers, placing him among Twitch’s biggest individual streamers ever.
Why was he so popular? #ElXokas had a style that was almost the opposite of Ibai’s polished events. His streams could feel chaotic and unfiltered. He talked directly to chat, argued with viewers, reacted to internet stories and often allowed conversations to spiral into something much bigger than the original topic. That unpredictability is valuable on Twitch. You cannot completely predict what will happen next. Sometimes the entire stream becomes a conversation that started as a throwaway comment. That is exactly the sort of thing that makes people stay.
3. AuronPlay: The TortillaLand Era # Creator: Raúl “AuronPlay” Álvarez Year: 2022 Peak: Approximately 600,000 during his biggest 2022 broadcasts Category: Minecraft / TortillaLand User discretion: Strong language and mature humour Stream: AuronPlay on Twitch What happened? #TortillaLand brought a large group of Spanish-speaking creators together in a shared Minecraft world. Minecraft was the setting. The creators were the actual show.
Why was it so popular? #TortillaLand worked like a reality show disguised as Minecraft. There were friendships. There were rivalries. There were accidents. There were running jokes. There were arguments that viewers would discuss long after the stream ended. The important part was continuity. If something happened on the server yesterday, it could affect what happened today. That gave viewers a reason to return. A normal Minecraft survival stream can be watched whenever you want. A creator roleplaying inside a shared story creates a reason to watch now.
2023: Ibai Does It Again #By 2023, La Velada was no longer an experiment. It was a franchise. And Ibai’s third edition broke the record again.
1. Ibai: La Velada del Año III # Creator: Ibai Llanos Date: July 1, 2023 Peak viewers: 3,442,725 Duration: Approximately 7 hours Venue: Metropolitano Stadium, Madrid Category: Creator boxing User discretion: Boxing, physical contact, injuries and strong language Stream: Ibai on Twitch Historical data: TwitchTracker What happened? #La Velada III moved into Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium. The event featured creator boxing, music performances, celebrity appearances and months of buildup. The final fight between Coscu and Germán Garmendia reached the event’s highest audience, helping Ibai reach 3,442,725 concurrent viewers. That broke his own record from 2022.
Why was it so popular? #By now, the viewer record had become part of the entertainment. People were watching the fights. They were also watching the viewer counter. Could Ibai break 3 million again? Could he beat his previous record? That created a second storyline running alongside the boxing. The event also had the advantage of scale. The Metropolitano made La Velada look like a major sports broadcast, while the fighters were still internet personalities whom viewers felt they knew personally. That combination is difficult for traditional television to reproduce.
2. TheGrefg: ESLAND Awards # Creator: TheGrefg Date: January 29, 2023 Peak viewers: Approximately 1.75 million Duration: Around 6 hours Category: Creator awards User discretion: Strong language, jokes and adult humour Stream: TheGrefg on Twitch What happened? #The ESLAND Awards became one of the major annual events for Spanish-speaking internet creators. Think of it as an awards ceremony created by the creator community for the creator community.
Why was it popular? #Awards shows naturally generate arguments. Who should win? Who got robbed? Who should have been nominated? Why did that person say that? Twitch chat turns every result into an immediate conversation. That makes the event unusually suited to livestreaming. A traditional awards show has an audience. An awards show on Twitch has an audience that is also talking constantly about the awards.
3. Squeezie: GP Explorer 2 # Creator: Lucas “Squeezie” Hauchard Date: September 9, 2023 Peak viewers: Approximately 1.34 million on Squeezie’s channel Overall event peak: Higher when community broadcasts are included Duration: Several hours Category: Creator motorsport User discretion: Motorsport, crashes and competitive driving Stream: Squeezie on Twitch What happened? #Squeezie put internet creators into Formula 4 cars and built an actual racing event around them. The first GP Explorer had already been huge. The second edition became even bigger. It reached approximately 1.39 million peak viewers according to Streams Charts, with Squeezie’s own channel accounting for a peak around the mid-1.3 million range.
Why was it so popular? #The audience did not need to be a hardcore motorsport fan. They knew the drivers. That was enough. The creators brought their existing communities with them, while the racing provided genuine stakes. There was also a real possibility of something going wrong. A creator who is funny on YouTube is one thing. A creator trying to race a Formula 4 car at speed is something else. That unpredictability made the event compelling even for viewers who normally would not watch motorsport.
2024: Twitch Starts Looking Like Television #The biggest Twitch events in 2024 increasingly looked like professional television productions. The difference was that the people presenting them had built their audiences online.
1. Ibai: La Velada del Año IV # Creator: Ibai Llanos Date: July 13, 2024 Peak viewers: 3,846,256 Duration: Approximately 8 hours Venue: Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid Category: Creator boxing User discretion: Boxing, physical contact, injuries and strong language Stream: Ibai on Twitch What happened? #La Velada IV took place at the Santiago Bernabéu. At this point, the event had moved well beyond its origins as a creator boxing experiment. It was a full entertainment production. There were fighters, musicians, celebrity appearances, sponsors and a huge live audience. The Twitch broadcast reached approximately 3.85 million viewers.
Why was it so popular? #La Velada had perfected the buildup. Viewers already knew the fighters. They had watched the training. They had followed the arguments. They knew the matchups. They had picked sides. The event itself was simply where all of that preparation finally paid off. That is why the audience was willing to sit through hours of programming. People were not waiting for one fight. They were following an entire story.
2. RebeuDeter: The French Creator Explosion # Creator: Lucas “RebeuDeter” Hauchard Year: 2024 Peak viewers: Approximately 1.2 million Category: Special event / variety User discretion: Mature humour and strong language Stream: RebeuDeter on Twitch Why was it popular? #French Twitch had been building an audience of its own for years, and 2024 showed how far that community had come. RebeuDeter was already a major creator, but large special broadcasts demonstrated that French-speaking Twitch could produce audiences that rivalled the biggest international creator communities. The important part was not one particular game. It was the creator’s community showing up together for something unusual. That pattern would become even more obvious with Squeezie’s GP Explorer.
3. Aminematue: Major 2024 Event Broadcast # Creator: Amine “Aminematue” Mahmoud Year: 2024 Peak viewers: Approximately 988,000 Category: Special events / variety User discretion: Strong language and mature humour Stream: Aminematue on Twitch Why was it popular? #Aminematue sits in the middle of the same French-speaking creator ecosystem that produced GP Explorer. The audience is not built around one game. It is built around personalities. That is a major change from the Twitch of the early 2020s. Viewers increasingly follow creators into whatever format they choose next. If the next project is football, they watch football. If it is gaming, they watch gaming. If it is an IRL event, they follow them there too. The creator has become the constant. The category is secondary.
2025: The Year Twitch Hit Another Level #2025 produced the biggest individual Twitch broadcast of this period. Ibai’s La Velada V did not merely break the previous record. It blew past it.
1. Ibai: La Velada del Año V # Creator: Ibai Llanos Date: July 26, 2025 Peak viewers on Ibai’s Twitch channel: 9,334,179 Twitch platform peak during the event: Approximately 14 million Duration: Several hours Venue: La Cartuja, Seville Category: Creator boxing / live entertainment User discretion: Boxing, physical contact, injuries and strong language Stream: Ibai on Twitch Historical data: Streams Charts What happened? #By the fifth edition, La Velada had become something much bigger than a Twitch show. It was a major internet entertainment event. The audience came from Twitch, YouTube, social media and the wider Spanish-speaking internet. Ibai’s Twitch channel reached approximately 9.33 million concurrent viewers. Twitch itself reached a platform-wide peak of more than 14 million concurrent viewers during the event.
Why was it so popular? #Five years of history had built up behind it. People knew what La Velada was. They knew the personalities. They knew there would be big production. They knew there would be surprises. They knew the event could break records. And that last part became part of the attraction. The audience was watching the show while also watching the viewer counter. Could this be the biggest Twitch stream ever? The answer became obvious very quickly. La Velada V demonstrated that a creator-led event could attract an audience normally associated with major television broadcasts. The difference was that the audience had grown around a creator rather than a traditional broadcaster.
2. Squeezie: GP Explorer 3 # Creator: Lucas “Squeezie” Hauchard Date: October 5, 2025 Peak viewers on Squeezie’s channel: Approximately 1.37 million Overall event peak across co-streams: Approximately 1.55 million Duration: Multi-day event Venue: Circuit Bugatti, Le Mans Category: Creator motorsport User discretion: Motorsport, crashes, high-speed driving and strong language Stream: Squeezie on Twitch Historical data: Streams Charts What happened? #GP Explorer 3 was billed as the final race in the series. It was held at Le Mans and expanded the event with international participants and co-streamers. Streams Charts recorded a peak of approximately 1.55 million across the event, while Squeezie’s own Twitch channel reached approximately 1.37 million.
Why was it popular? #The final-race angle gave the event a natural storyline. Fans knew this was supposed to be the last GP Explorer. That immediately made the event more important. The production had also grown considerably. The event was no longer just a creator racing day. It had concerts, professional production, international co-streaming and a much broader audience. It was creator culture using motorsport as its stadium.
3. Kai Cenat: Mafiathon 3 Finale # Creator: Kai Cenat Date: September 30, 2025 Peak viewers: 1,005,331 Average viewers: 672,771 Duration: 2 hours 50 minutes Category: Just Chatting Event: Mafiathon 3 finale Notable guest: LeBron James User discretion: Strong language, adult humour and mature topics Stream: Historical TwitchTracker record What happened? #Mafiathon 3 was not one stream. It was a month-long story. Kai streamed day after day, brought in guests and kept pushing toward increasingly ridiculous milestones. The final broadcast was the payoff. The stream title itself gave away the storyline: Kai was with LeBron James, the million-subscriber milestone was approaching and the famous haircut was happening. The finale reached 1,005,331 concurrent viewers.
Why was it so popular? #The audience had spent an entire month watching the story develop. That is the secret. If Kai had announced a random stream with LeBron, it would have been huge. But after thirty days of Mafiathon, the audience was not merely watching a guest appearance. They were watching the conclusion of something they had already invested time in. Mafiathon is basically reality television without episodes. The story is live. The schedule can change. Guests can arrive unexpectedly. The creator can get tired. Something can go wrong. And the audience gets to watch all of it happen.
2026: Twitch’s Audience Is Becoming Multiplatform #2026 is still in progress, so these are 2026 so far figures rather than a final yearly ranking. There is another reason to be careful with 2026. Some of the biggest creator events are now being streamed on multiple platforms. That makes Twitch-only comparisons less useful than they were in 2021 or 2022.
1. Ibai: La Velada del Año VI # Creator: Ibai Llanos Date: July 25, 2026 Peak viewers on Twitch: Approximately 1.6 million Overall series peak across platforms: Approximately 8.7 million Duration: Approximately 8.5 hours Venue: Estadio La Cartuja, Seville Category: Creator boxing User discretion: Boxing, physical contact, injuries and strong language Stream: Ibai on Twitch Historical data: Streams Charts What happened? #La Velada VI continued Ibai’s creator boxing franchise. But the Twitch number tells only part of the story. The event reportedly reached approximately 8.7 million peak viewers across platforms, while Ibai’s Twitch broadcast peaked around the 1.6 million mark.
Why did Twitch account for less of the audience? #Because the audience had more places to watch. Ibai’s audience is now spread across Twitch, YouTube and other platforms. That changes the meaning of a Twitch record. La Velada VI did not suddenly become less popular. Instead, its audience became less concentrated on Twitch. This may be one of the most important developments in the history of creator livestreaming. The platform is increasingly becoming secondary to the creator. People do not necessarily think:
“I am going to Twitch to watch Ibai.” They think: “Ibai is live. Where can I watch?” That is a major change from the early 2020s.
2. Virginia Fonseca: First Twitch IRL Stream # Creator: Virginia Fonseca Date: February 17 to 18, 2026 Peak viewers: Approximately 664,000 Category: IRL / Just Chatting Event: Brazilian Carnival preparation User discretion: General IRL content and mature conversation Stream: VirginiaTV on Twitch What happened? #Virginia Fonseca was already an enormous personality outside Twitch. Her first Twitch stream was an IRL broadcast around her preparations for Brazilian Carnival. It attracted roughly 663,000 concurrent viewers.
Why was it so popular? #This was a perfect example of what happens when a celebrity with a huge audience enters Twitch. The audience did not need to discover Virginia through Twitch. They already knew her from other platforms. That audience simply followed her into livestreaming. The stream also had the appeal of access. Instead of seeing a polished social media post after the event, viewers could watch behind the scenes as it happened. That is one of the biggest advantages of livestreaming for celebrities. It makes the audience feel closer to the person.
3. Kai Cenat: 2026 Major Creator Streams # Creator: Kai Cenat Year: 2026 Peak: More than 700,000 on some major 2026 broadcasts Category: Just Chatting / IRL / creator events User discretion: Strong language, mature humour and unpredictable live content Stream: Kai Cenat on Twitch Why include a regular Kai stream? #Because giant events can hide an important part of Kai’s success. He does not need a boxing stadium to pull a huge audience. He does not always need a celebrity guest. The audience itself is interested in what Kai is doing. That is the purest form of personality-driven streaming. The audience comes for the person first and the content second. In that sense, Kai represents one of the clearest endpoints of Twitch’s evolution during the 2020s. A creator can become the event.
The Biggest Twitch Streamers Are Not Necessarily the Biggest Streams #This is one of the easiest things to get wrong when researching Twitch. There is a difference between: Most-watched streamer and Most-watched individual stream. A creator such as xQc can accumulate enormous total watch time because he streams frequently. An event such as La Velada can attract several million viewers during a single broadcast. Those are completely different measurements. For example, Streams Charts recorded xQc as Twitch’s most-watched channel by hours watched in 2020, with roughly 151.8 million hours. That does not mean xQc had the biggest individual stream of 2020. It means he generated an enormous amount of viewing over the entire year.
Peak Viewers vs. Hours Watched #If you are comparing Twitch records, these four measurements are worth keeping straight.
Peak concurrent viewers #The highest number of viewers watching simultaneously. This is the main metric used in this article.
Average viewers #The average number of simultaneous viewers across the broadcast. This is useful for judging how consistently people watched.
Hours watched #The total amount of viewing time generated by a broadcast or channel. This is particularly useful for measuring creators who stream frequently.
Unique viewers #The number of individual viewers who watched at some point during a broadcast. A stream can have millions of unique viewers without ever having millions of simultaneous viewers.
Why the Biggest Twitch Streams Keep Getting Bigger #There is no single formula for a huge Twitch stream, but the same patterns keep appearing.
The audience has to have a reason to watch live #A prerecorded video can be watched tomorrow. A boxing match cannot. A reveal cannot. A game finale cannot. A record attempt feels different when you are watching it happen. That urgency is one of the most valuable things Twitch has.
The people need to matter #This is why creator boxing works. Two unknown fighters can put on a great fight. But two creators who have been arguing online for six months create something else. The audience already knows the backstory. They have already picked a side. The fight simply gives the story a conclusion.
Uncertainty keeps people watching #Live content is unpredictable. A creator can lose. A game can crash. A guest can say something unexpected. A fighter can get knocked down. A technical problem can suddenly become the biggest moment of the night. That uncertainty is part of the appeal.
Chat turns viewers into a crowd #Watching a huge Twitch event can feel like being inside a stadium. The chat is moving. Everyone reacts at the same time. People spam emotes. People argue. People make jokes. Clips appear almost immediately. The audience is not just watching. It is creating the atmosphere around the stream.
The Evolution of Twitch During the 2020s #Looking at the biggest streams year by year reveals a much bigger change.
2020: Watch the game #Fortnite, Minecraft, esports and other games were still the foundation. The streamer was often the person helping viewers experience a game or event.
2021: Watch the creator #TheGrefg’s Fortnite skin reveal showed that millions of people would watch simply because something important was happening to the creator.
2022: Watch the event #La Velada II showed that creators could build their own sports entertainment properties.
2023: Creator television #Stadiums, awards shows, music performances and professional production became increasingly normal.
2024: Watch with your favourite personality #Co-streaming became a major part of esports. A viewer might prefer to watch Worlds with Caedrel rather than through the official broadcast.
2025: Creator reality television #Mafiathon demonstrated how a month-long livestream could become a story with characters, milestones and a finale.
2026: The creator matters more than the platform #La Velada VI showed the direction of travel. The event could be enormous even if the audience was spread across Twitch and YouTube. The creator is becoming the distribution channel.
The Streams That Best Represent the Decade #If the goal is not simply to sort a spreadsheet but to understand how Twitch changed, these are the broadcasts I would remember.
2020: TheGrefg and Galactus #The moment Fortnite events and creator reactions became inseparable.
2020: Shroud’s return #Proof that a creator’s audience could follow them from one platform to another.
2021: TheGrefg’s Fortnite skin reveal #The creator himself became the event.
2021: La Velada del Año #The beginning of creator boxing as a major Twitch format.
2022: La Velada II #The moment a creator-made event became a genuine Twitch record breaker.
2023: La Velada III #Ibai turned breaking his own record into part of the entertainment.
2024: La Velada IV #Creator entertainment reached football-stadium scale.
2024: Kai Cenat’s Elden Ring marathon #A reminder that personality and endurance could still compete with giant productions.
2025: La Velada V #The biggest Twitch creator broadcast of the decade so far.
2025: Mafiathon 3 #A month-long stream became a reality show with a million-viewer finale.
2026: La Velada VI #A sign that the biggest creator events are increasingly becoming platform-independent.
A Note About Old Twitch VODs #Researching old Twitch broadcasts is surprisingly difficult. Twitch VODs are not guaranteed to remain available forever. Creators delete streams. VODs expire. Channels change. Some major events were also streamed through several channels. For that reason, this article does not pretend that every historical broadcast has a working VOD. When the original stream is available, the Stream link points to it. When it is not, the link points to the creator’s official Twitch channel. That is more useful than leaving a dead link in the article, and it avoids pretending that a random current broadcast is the historical stream.
Methodology and Sources #This article uses peak concurrent viewers as its primary ranking metric. The main statistical references are:
TwitchTracker Streams Charts SullyGnome Guinness World Records For older streams, figures can differ slightly between analytics services because historical Twitch data has not always been preserved in exactly the same way. The most important examples are: TheGrefg’s January 2021 Fortnite skin reveal, which reached 2,468,668 viewers according to Guinness World Records. Ibai’s La Velada II, which reached 3,356,074 viewers. Ibai’s La Velada III, which reached 3,442,725 viewers. Ibai’s La Velada IV, which reached approximately 3.85 million viewers. Ibai’s La Velada V, which reached approximately 9.33 million viewers on his Twitch channel. Squeezie’s GP Explorer 3, which reached approximately 1.37 million viewers on his own channel, with the overall event reaching a higher peak when co-streams were included. Kai Cenat’s Mafiathon 3 finale, which reached 1,005,331 viewers. These distinctions matter because a channel peak and an event-wide peak are not necessarily the same thing. Final Thoughts #The biggest Twitch streams of the 2020s tell a much more interesting story than a simple leaderboard. At the beginning of the decade, Twitch was still largely about watching people play games. Then creators became celebrities. Then celebrities started streaming. Then creators started making sports events. Then they started producing television-style shows. Then they started building entire entertainment businesses around livestreaming. Ibai’s La Velada is probably the clearest example. The first event was an unusual idea involving creators and boxing. Five editions later, it was attracting millions of simultaneous viewers and filling some of Spain’s biggest stadiums. Kai Cenat represents another side of the same evolution. His biggest broadcasts show how far a creator can go on personality alone. A game, celebrity guest or special event can help, but the audience is ultimately there because they want to see what Kai does next. That might be the biggest change of the decade. The streamer is no longer simply the person broadcasting the event. The streamer is the event.
What did we miss? #Twitch has produced a lot of ridiculous livestream moments over the years, and no list like this is ever going to capture all of them. Did we leave out a stream that you think belongs here? Maybe it was a legendary gaming session, an IRL disaster, a marathon that somehow lasted forever, a creator feud that everyone was talking about, or one of those completely unexpected Twitch moments that became internet history overnight. Drop your pick in the comments below. Tell us which stream you would add, what made it memorable, and, if you can find it, share the VOD or a clip so everyone else can experience it too. And if you were watching Twitch during the 2020s, which of these streams do you actually remember watching live?
Official Creator Channels #If an old VOD has disappeared, these are the official Twitch channels linked from the relevant entries above.
TheGrefg on Twitch Ibai on Twitch Shroud on Twitch ElXokas on Twitch AuronPlay on Twitch Squeezie on Twitch RebeuDeter on Twitch Aminematue on Twitch Kai Cenat on Twitch Caedrel on Twitch VirginiaTV on Twitch
The biggest Twitch streams of the 2020s, year by year, from TheGrefg’s Fortnite record to Ibai’s La Velada and Kai Cenat’s Mafiathon.
